Child Life Internship

Rady Children's Hosptial San Diego 

During my ACLP-recognized internship, I am set to complete 600 hours over 16 weeks of in-patient, outpatient, and clinic settings across Hem/Onc, PICU, NICU, Proton Radiation, Emergency Room, MedSurg, Radiology, and more. I am learning and growing as a child life professional all while getting hands-on practice in a clinical setting supervised by various certified child life specialists. I am getting to practice and apply my knowledge and skills learned through practicum and master program while educating patients (and/or their siblings) about their illness or condition; preparing and supporting patients for procedures; planning and implementing therapeutic and recreational activities for patients in the playroom and at the bedside; supervising volunteers; attending patient rounds; and identifying the roles of various multidisciplinary team members. I have had the opportunity to learn about the psychosocial needs of different age groups and complete a series of  ACLP modules on a variety of topics such as preparation, distraction, medical play, documentation, bereavement, and family-centered care.

Child Life Internship at Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego. I completed over 600 hours of ACLP-recognized hours under the direct supervision of CCLSs. After the final evaluation through 6 rotations, my internship supervisors stated I exceeded the job entry level and was ready for a career as a child life specialist. 

Child Life Practicum with Child Life United to Enhance my personal understanding of child life through ACLP guidelines where I applied clinical knowledge to practice while engaging in child life material with enthusiasm. I gained hands-on child life experience through observation, case studies, presentations, question panels, and more. I Evaluated child life theories against real-world scenarios, enhancing practical skills. As well as thrived in child life practices, enhancing skills through direct engagement and theory application

Previous to 2023

Volunteer and observations at various children's hospitals with CCLSs. Worked closely with organizations such as Pinkey Swear Foundation, Kids Kicking Cancer, Dance Marathon, and Children's Minnesota. I created my own hospital care kits "Kyla's Care Kits" which included coloring books, educational pamphlets, journals, crayons, fidget toys, stress balls, and stickers; over 400 kits were handed out over 4 rural hospitals in MN.
